I believe the following members should be able to:
- see the link to "IVAN Development" from the main forum page
- view the IVAN Development forum
- read the topics & reply to them in IVAN Development

4zb4, Arturion, Chaostrom, Alveradok, Z, and all mods/admins
Can one of you who is NOT a mod confirm that you can do all of those things?

Hi there.
I can view and post in the Ivan Development forum, HOWEVER I cannot see a link to it on the main forum page, and next to Programming there is the word "private" where the most recent topic/post should be.
Also, in Programming there is a little section up the top for the sub-forum(s), but it is empty.

Praise the sun! Jolly co-operation!

I have very little time to help but I'll do what I can when I can. I know C++ but I'm not familiar with the source or the scriptsystem yet.

Still, sign me up as a programmer/advisor.

Take that!

Why is the development subforum going to be restricted? Couldn't you just have non-devs unable to post?

Good idea to organise and try to relaunch dev of IVAN.
Maybe I can help, I've done a bit of source diving by the past, I just wish I have a bit more free time...

Capristo, if you haven't already, please add sPlath, Iankill and Planplan to the sub-forum.

JimmyJ and others who want to see the sub-forum: It's not visible because I, or we, don't see any gain from making it visible. If you want to contribute then say so and I'll have you added to the "team". If not, then wait for our announcements about the progress.

The pros of visibility, IMO:

1. We get to see what progress (if any) you're actually making.

2. We get to know you actually *are* doing something and that this isn't just some kind of vaporware (or that the project to resurrect IVAN has died somehow).

3. People who haven't joined and aren't sure they want to might have more incentive to do so, or at least can judge more accurately whether they'll want to or not.

What are your cons?

All of those can be achieved by giving out information instead of letting you look for it yourselves. Cons of keeping it hidden are that we have the peace and freedom to do what we do. There's no idea of having the customer looking over the carpenters shoulder at all times... I don't mean to keep anything secret; I just want to keep the development a separate project.

Ok, so in other words if we aren't hearing anything nothing is happening? I mean I understand you want to avoid people criticizing the project before it gets off the ground, but I'm concerned because of what I'm not seeing. If you guys are still missing key sorts of people, maybe you should go searching for people who might be interested in the jobs needed on other sites; no offense to those who've shown up but betting on people appearing out of thin air to fill needed places isn't precisely a winning strategy.

As far as the progress I'd like to see, something like bi or trimonthly state of the union addressals would be fine (not expecting something like Toady's daily updates here, but when it's been more or less totally quiet for that long I get antsy and wondering if anything's coming of that announcement or if it's going to dissipate without explanation the same way the last time someone said they were reviving IVAN development did).

One other thing: if you really want this to be a separate project, why not just make a new section for this? That way things like suggestions, bugs, and announcements have a home in advance (and plausibly relevant topics that already exist can be cribbed into the relevant new spots). Also what could perhaps be done is tagging the hidden board on there instead of in IVAN coding. IVAN variants could stand to get their own section as part of the restructuring, presuming that with the new version comes more active interest (and also could maybe have a buddy in the form of an IVAN variant development subforum).

Maybe cut the peer in two (don't know if this expression exist in English ), allowed people could see and post, others (maybe selected) could just see ?

For my part, I slowly abandoned the forums and my (small) contributions because of the project looking dead, so, maybe a visible forum with restricted post could make both parties happy

I should add that if this project is going to use a system like SVN, we could allow anybody to see the progress in real time.

Just some thought and ideas thrown randomly after waking up

PS : I just don't want to see some kind of tension between allowed people on the project forum and the others, we are a small community, we should preserve that.

I couldn't agree more.

I see no harm at all in allowing every member to see the forum, and, indeed, it would make us happy Also, making it visible would allow people that are curious to just statisfy that curiosity, while they won't need to be 'developer'. The danger exists that people would enlist themselves as developer just to see the progress (and possibly whine about it). Allowing the board to be seen by either everyone, or a 'spectator' group, would solve that problem.

And that's what we've been discussing, to let everyone see the board. The reason there's been so few announcements is maybe that I just had a two weeks honeymoon in Africa, during which I visited the internet whole two times. I don't know what you others have been up to during that time, but at least there wasn't much to see in the development sub when I came back. And yes, I've asked my friends on facebook for help. We've got plenty of people; even a few with at least some experience in coding. I think we might actually have too many people... We'll see. This is a project started by beginneers who don't get paid; don't expect something to happen after two weeks! It'll take way longer than that.

Maybe visible to contributing members only? i.e. those with 5+ posts?

I don't see anything wrong with letting people see, but I can absolutely understand not wanting anyone except the people working on it to be able to post.

Makes sense to me to do it that way too. Both concerns are addressed this way and no more wondering.

OK, sorry for not responding earlier. The following people should be able to view and post at IVAN development sub-forum. If not, then let me or Capristo know. I'm making the sub-forum visible to everyone at some point because of the demand. Ugh.

Wave 1: 4zb4, Arturion, Chaostrom, Alveradok, Z, and all mods/admins
Wave 2: sPlath, Iankill and Planplan

I'm asking, since this far it's mostly been me and Chao posting there. Nothing has been achieved as of yet, as far as I know anyway. Chaostrom's given a few things to do and I've even given a timeline, but as there has been no response of any kind this far I decided to ask if you guys can see what's going on in the sub forum. Planplan had problems earlier, I don't know if that's been fixed yet. Capristo, would it be easier to start a separate forum for this project?
