Especially when I have an otherwise fair character going... found broken arcanite chain mail +1, broken adamantine helmet +1, gloves of dex +2, boots of strength +2, iron sickle +3, balsa spear +5, and a bones file with a whip of thievery, an amulet of ESP, and a wand of mirroring (among other things). I wander into GC1 and the first thing I find is an ommel tooth spear. Go back to Attnam, sell it for some gold (which I can really use for the aforementioned broken stuff), then go back in, start walking down a corridor and BOOM dead. Amazingly only one of my destructibles was lost (a scroll of hardening). Here are a couple pictures of my inventory (which is sadly not likely to be as interesting as my equipment):

Yeah, I hate landmines too. I think 40% of my characters die because of those. Sometimes I feel safe when I have cloak of fire resistance +3 , but then I hit big mine and die.

Silly bastards and your lack of levitation belts. Of course the Asbestos Cloak helps a lot, especially against the kamikaze dwarves mentioned by Cerumen.

Damn, balsa spear +5 is almost as good as a mithril spear...

Actually, Balsa Spear +5 is much better than an unenchanted mithril one. The balsa spear +5 has damage of 4-8, it's extremely accurate, and it's sturdy. Mithril one has 3-6 damage, is accurate and sturdy.

Mithril spear is 3-6? Then what material was I thinking of...

Oh the landmines, the landmines... GC1... I had gotten about 10 very good sips of water, and an arcanite qstaff of w. smells, I managed to survive one landmine, but not another...

The few mines I've stepped over haven't gone off. Then again, I've never gotten far.

The mines that go boom when you step on them are hidden. The only way you can notice them automatically before stepping on them is if you (as I understand it) pass some form of Perception check while next to one and before moving to another square. Fail said check and move to where the mine is, and only then will you find it to have been a bad idea. Two other options are to 's'earch for said mines (but you will likely get bored doing this long before it pays off in the form of a mine you don't step on even in GC, where they are most prevalent) and to wear a ring of searching (which boosts your ability to notice nearby mines by a lot). There is also the belt of levitation, but getting that without a wish requires some patience...

Somebody around here stated that Perception does not affect searching... or at least, for sure, not its range. It's always one square away.

Fire protection and the ring of searching are not that hard to come by (I even get these generated in Attnam shop quite often). The real problem is equipment explosion.

Fire? "Duh, I'm protected!"
Wand of polymorph explodes! "Oops, I'm a mushroom now!"
Wand of striking explodes! "Shit."

That hardly becomes a problem with a good box.

If you wear two rings of fire protection, does the protection stack?

AFAIK, yes. Also, you can enchant cloaks of protection for bonus protection (also, rings offer twice the base production than cloaks IIRC).
